Trailer - Welcome to Shoes Off

Transcript

Have you ever tried to hide parts of your culture or heritage in order to fit in?

Have you ever felt like a bit of an outsider in the country you grew up in?

Do you often just have a laugh about some of the weird things your parents say?

Do I have a show for you.

Shoes Off is a new podcast that features stories about Asian Australian culture. We’ll tackle topics we’re all too familiar with:

“…and I want to find the best Bubble tea in the world.”

“I was forced to play the piano from when I was 4 years old. “

And maybe some issues we haven’t thought that much about:

“There's always a racial hierarchy in play. The details might be different, but the details reflect the broader social structures around race.”

“And there is resentment towards international students among Australian students, not all , but there is certainly some resentment, the feeling that courses are being dumbed down to cater to these foreign students who can barely speak English.”

Plus we’ll hear stories from some of our asian brethren:

“Most western parents just going to go, all right, you're punished. But my mom's idea of punishment was to kick me out.”

It’s at times light, heart-wrenching, and a little personal.

“Does that feel like I'm running away from my Chinese culture?”

But most of all, it’s a celebration of what makes us unique and wonderful as Asians in Australia because we do not talk about our culture enough.

There are so many stories out there, and I can’t wait to share them with you.

Shoes Off launches on the 25th of September so please subscribe to get this cultural goodness in your ears as soon as it’s available.
